Sticking, loose and jammed locks

Lock repair in Bethlehem, PA

A lock that sticks, a key that has to be jiggled, a deadbolt that will not throw, a knob that spins. Most of it is repairable on the spot, and we tell you when it is not worth repairing.

Things we fix at the door

Describe the symptom when you call and we will bring the parts most likely to be needed.

  • Key has to be wiggled or forced to turn
  • Deadbolt does not go all the way across
  • Latch does not catch, door drifts open
  • Knob or lever is loose or spins
  • Key goes in but will not turn at all
  • Lock is frozen or gritty after winter
  • Thumb turn is stiff or broken
  • Door was kicked or pried and the lock survived, barely

If a lock cannot be repaired properly, we say so and give you the pricing structure for a replacement instead.

Repair first, replace when it makes sense

A lot of lock problems are not in the lock. The strike plate drifts out of line as a house settles, the door sags on its hinges, or the screws holding the deadbolt have worked loose. Those are adjustments, not new hardware, and they are the first thing we check.

When it is the lock, we clean and lubricate cylinders, replace worn springs and pins, and swap latches and bolts. When the lock is a cheap builder-grade unit that has reached the end of its life, replacing it is the honest answer, and we carry deadbolts and handle sets on the van so it can happen in the same visit.

Lock repair questions

Is it cheaper to repair or replace?

Usually repair, unless the lock is low-grade to begin with. We will price both on the spot and let you choose.

Can you fix a lock that was damaged in a break-in?

Often. If the door frame is split the lock will not hold, and that is a carpentry job before it is a lock job. We tell you which you need.

Do you repair antique or mortise locks?

Many of the older mortise locks in Bethlehem's row homes, yes. Parts can be the limit; we will tell you what is possible once we see it.
