What makes a lock high-security
Three things, and a lock needs all of them. First, a restricted keyway: the key blank is patented and only sold to authorized locksmiths, so copies can only be made by us, with your authorization card. Second, a pin stack or sidebar design that defeats bumping and ordinary picking. Third, hardened inserts that stop a drill. A deadbolt from the hardware store has none of these; a Mul-T-Lock, Schlage Primus or ASSA Abloy cylinder has all three.
The practical benefit for a home is key control. If you have ever handed a key to a contractor, a cleaner or a tenant, you have no idea how many copies exist. With a restricted key, you do, because every one of them was cut by us against your card.

Who asks for this
Homeowners who have had a break-in and never want to wonder about a key again. Landlords with a dozen doors who want a master key that cannot be duplicated. Shops with staff turnover. Anyone who keeps something valuable behind one door: a home office, a gun safe room, a garage full of tools.
We will tell you honestly when it is overkill. For a lot of homes, a Grade 1 deadbolt and a reinforced strike plate do more than a restricted cylinder would. For the rest, this is the right tool.

Can I get copies made somewhere else?
No, and that is the point. Copies come from us, cut against your authorization card, and we keep a record.
Do I need to replace my whole lock?
Usually not. Schlage Primus in particular fits existing Schlage hardware, and Mul-T-Lock and ASSA Abloy make retrofit cylinders for most common locks.
Is a high-security lock pick-proof?
Nothing is. These are built to resist the methods that open ordinary locks in seconds, which is what matters in practice.
